I am Tomathan, born in Austin, Texas and raised in a farm in a small rural area called Giddings, by my great grandmother. I am the oldest of 4 siblings. I am a proud United States Navy war veteran, an educator and mentor, actor and published model. I have earned a BBA and MBA, also member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.

1.When did you first realise you wanted to be a model?

I first realized I wanted to be a model, at a very early age, like 12, when looks and appearances were everything to everyone. But for me, my great grandmother Josephine, who I will refer to as “Mother”, would spend countless hours during sewing and making clothes for my siblings and I. She had this long old school mirror in her room and I would stand there, as her muse.  Because if that, I was always dressed differently than my peers in their designer apparel. I was unique though, going to middle school with homemade clothes, you can only imagine how I was teased. I had no idea, until I got older, that being unique is absolutely self gratifying. I embrace it now.

2.At what age did you first start modelling?

The age I first started modeling, that I can truly look back on and remember, probably when I learned how to walk and my great grandmother would make things and put them on me.

3.What was your first big break and how did it arise?

Oh gosh. Honestly, not until 2010.  I was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida at the time, and there was a major event called the “2010 Sensationnel Hair Icon Show”, judged by NEO-Soul Celebrity Angie Stone and hosted by Celebrity Stylist, Glynn Jackson, founder of Glynn Jackson the Agency.  Well, I had to go pick up tickets from the location.  Unbeknownst to me, that is where they were having the male model casting, so I’m “walking” and was pulled into a room full of guys lined up and there was a panel of judges at the front of the room. I was informed it was for the show. I was completely blown away. I was asked to “walk” for them. Gosh I was sooo nervous because I inherited my mother’s bowleg walk. Lol. I was next in line, I walked to the front of the room, to the judges table and gave them my signature “Tomathan’s strut” and was booked for the show that evening.

4.What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?

I would say one of my biggest achievements would be surviving the “War on Iraq”. I was able to literally walk through one of the palaces of Saddam Hussein.

5.How do you like to stay fit?

Staying fit has always been easy for me. I come from a long line of athletic track runners. Which also led to my athletic scholarship to college at Prairie View A&M University. Being military, I gained a new found respect for physical fitness. I carry that same motivation now. I know that being a successful model you have got to be at your best. I do a lot of cardio. I love stairs. I will do some weight lifting but not as much as one would think. I like to go outside, run hills and climb trees. Every chance I get, I am either on a tennis or volleyball court.

My advice for those wanting to start a modeling career is..ask yourself “what is your vision?…your goals?…Reach out and gain frat mentors. Know that it will take a great deal of perseverance, having tough skin and, also, acknowledging that you will have to make some grave sacrifices which comes with the industry. Always remember that your greatest investment is within yourself. Trust me, great people will see your great work, and will come to your aide on your journey to success.

8.What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

The funniest thing that has happened to me recently was just the other day. I take these mini foodie tours to downtown Houston. It’s my “me time” and it’s a great social skills builder. Well, I was trying to take a really cute selfie with an employee of the establishment and right before I could snap the picture of us, up pops up a lewd and lascivious picture message from a close friend who was sending out an off colored joke. The contents had me so embarrassed because I tried to hurry up and swipe the message “upwards” and ended up opening the whole message. Haaaaa the look on both of our faces was epic. We both just burst out laughing.
