We had the pleasure of getting to know a little more about Sarah-Louise Hawkins model, nurse and body builder extraordinaire. Sarah-Louise started modelling in her late teens but after discovering clean eating and the gym she went on to be awarded 3rd place in Muscle Model Europe. Anyway, without giving too much away in the opening paragraph why not read the interview and find out for yourself about Sarah-Louise.
1.When did you first realise you wanted to be a model?
I think I was 16-17 when I looked at all these images are beautiful women and thought I would LOVE to do that but I’m not good enough, thin enough, pretty enough etc. I aspired to be like the strong, powerful women in the Fitness Magazines.
2.At what age did you first start modelling
I started modelling around 17-18 and it was Lingerie, Swim Wear and Editorial at first as I had just started going to the gym. At the time I didn’t know a whole lot about building MUSCLE so I did an awful lot of cardio and terrible diets to slim down and fit into the stereotypical magazine model image.
3.What was your first big break and how did it arise?
I guess it was after the first time I competed in a BodyBuilding competition when the Daily Mail picked me up and said they’d loved my story, how I went from being very over weight to female bodybuilding. They wanted to feature me and share my story. From then I was featured in the Daily Star, Gym 100, Female BodyBuilding online and a bunch of other online magazines and websites before getting my first Published 2 page spread as a Fitness Model in Train Magazine.
4.What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?
I think Train Magazine was something I was really proud of. I made the front page and had my own two page spread. I had people contact me from all over the world expressing that I had inspired them or they had similar stories. Some are now even my clients. This was the most AMAZING feeling.
I guess also in my most recent competition I was awarded 3rd place Muscle Model in Europe and gained my Pro Card for this.
I also keep a day to day diary as most people do. In the back of it every year I write out my goals for the year. 9/10 of those goals I achieve and to cross things off like that is a BIG deal to me. That is pure personal satisfaction and makes me actually very proud of myself.
5.How do you like to stay fit?
I train every day, I make sure I eat right, drink plenty of water and attempt to sleep right. I work a lot of night shifts as a Nurse so I don’t always get the sleep I need.. or keep my stress levels within normal range – haha!
I make sure I set goals and enter competitions and book up my diary for photoshoots so it pushes me to stay in shape and motivated also.
6.What’s your favourite food?
My favourite food is Ice Cream and Pop Corn. And I more often than not mix the two together – that’s when I’m at my happiest!!
7.Any advice for people wanting to start modelling?
I think the most important thing is – and as cliche as it may sound – believing you can do it or having someone believe in you in genuinely half the battle. If in your mind you think, ‘I’m not good enough, I’m too fat, I’m not pretty…’ NOT just with modelling. With anything you wish to do… guess what? Your mind will say ‘ok, your right!’
Whether you think you can, or you can’t… your right.
8.What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
I don’t know if you happened to see my most recent YouTube video or me getting really angry about a gym socialite… I was on the stair master when he tried to attract my attention by grabbing my ankle. I nearly knocked my teeth out. It was NUTS.
9.What’s song best describes you?
Nicki Minaj – Champion.
10.What would you be if you weren’t a model?
Well; I’m also a Nurse. Originally a critical care nurse which I loved. But if I wasn’t doing either of those, I would like to be a Pathologist in Mortuary performing Autopsies. I have worked with a Pathologist whilst training to be a Nurse and it was just incredible. Failing that, i’d make cupcakes or be an ice cream sampler please!
11.Tell me something about you not many people know?
Wow… how long do you have!
I’ve fallen out of the back of a Truck before and fallen right down a flight or stairs and never broken a single bone in my body!
I’m a trained Make-Up Artist studied in London.
I play Piano and used to teach Guitar.
12.What do you like doing in your free time?
I like to read a lot. I have a huge pile of books I collect and make my way through. I’ll usually read an hour a day if I’m lucky. I spend A LOT of time with my family and my dog, they literally are my best friends. Or spend time with my girlfriends who are AMAZING.
13.What do you think is the most interesting thing about you?
I guess the fact that I am living proof that if you’re not happy with something, then change it. I HATE excuses. I lost a ton of BodyFat and Weight to compete in a BodyBuilding show whilst competing my final year as a Nursing Student, writing my Dissertation Research Proposal and doing a night course of Sports Nutrition. I then prepped and competed whilst coaching my clients and working as a Critical Care Nurse in the Emergency Department. If you want something badly enough, you’ll do it.
14.What was your nickname at school?
15.What three things do you need to be successful in this industry?
1… Self belief. You’ll find a lot of times where people will let you down, not believe in you and even betray you. These are not the people to be around. YOU have to KNOW your worth.
2… Surround yourself with only positive and uplifting people and things that make you happy.
3… Vision. If you can visualise yourself making whatever you want to happen, happen, then you are just confirming what you want and your life will make that happen.
Thank you so much for having me for interviewing. It’s a pleasure!!
